have severe multiple hand icaps are among the last to be moved out But while the state has long range plans to build more community residences for the retarded right now there are only about 10 such residences in the entire state designed specifically for the autistic says the OMRDD spokesman Some autistic persons have been placed in community residences for the mentally retarded In Westchester groundbreaking is expected to take place shortly on a residence for the autistic on Route 128 in Goldens Bridge says Charles Await a commu nity residence specialist for the Westchester Devel opmental Disabilities Services Office A second home for the autistic is also being considered for Bryant Avenue in White Plains he says on the site where the state is building a complex of eight community resi dences The New York State Society for Autistic Children and state mental health agencies agree that in some instances there may be a need to institutionalize the autistic if only for a short time But all agree that in the best of all possible worlds institutions are not the best environment for autistic persons an institution everything is done for says Dr Saribeyoglu reinforces their dependence
