Countertop Disinfectant Recipe (2)

Here is our easy homemade countertop disinfectant recipe. This recipe works well as an all purpose cleaner and I use it for lots of cleaning applications in my home. The alcohol is a disinfectant and the ammonia is a disinfectant and also a degreaser.

You can save a lot of money making your own cleaning products instead of buying the expensive ones at the store that have the same ingredients.

When you use this or any kitchen and bathroom cleaner, it is important that you NEVER mix any cleaning product that has ammonia with any cleaning product that has bleach. If you use bleach and ammonia together, it creates a poisonous gas. This applies to all cleaners, not just homemade cleaners. This countertop disinfectant uses ammonia, so you would want to avoid using it with any cleaner that includes bleach.

Here is our countertop and all purpose cleaner recipe. Mix some together and keep it in a spray bottle wherever you need quick clean-ups and disinfecting.

I don’t have granite or marble so someone out there may have a better idea but from what I have studied on it you can’t use vinegar at all. It will over time will mess up your counter. If you dump ammonia on your counter it won’t hurt but using it over time will eat away at it too and dull it.

The best thing to use is soapy water but for an nice shine use 50/50 alcohol and water then buff with a soft cloth. Although I have found most things if you even use just water or soapy water, if you dry with a soft cloth afterwards it usually shines it nicely. I find it is the drying and buffing which makes things shine and not the cleaning product because it polishes away the film that is left with most cleaning products and even things which are rinsed with just water.
Look at how many products say “dry with soft cloth” that is the secret not the cleaner.

What can I use to really clean me flat top stove?

To be honest vicki I have never found baking soda or vinegar to do a thing for really cleaning my stove top. Tawra uses the leftover soap when she makes soap to clean hers but I don’t make soap so what I use is what is called a Chore Boy you can get these at a lot of grocery stores or wal mart and recently I have been using just a good old SOS pad. I would test a spot of course and I use a light hand but it doesn’t seem to scratch mine at all and makes easy work of cleaning it. Also on a normal basis I just lay a soppy, soapy dishrag on the area and let it soak for a bit. That tends to take care of 95% of my cleaning up – that and cleaning things right away and not letting them get out of hand.

Bar Keepers Friend. You can get it on line or at bed bath and beyond

Thank you Ann I have tried Bar Keepers friend too. Do it works ok for mineral build up and rust stains but please be aware that it does not disinfect at all. This means that even though it works well on getting the scum and mineral build up off of your shower it isn’t getting rid of the germs, mold or bacteria in there. Be careful many are using products that look like they make things sparkly clean but then can’t figure out why they have mold growing back so fast or their family keeps having problems with athletes foot – it is because what they are using does not disinfect.

Personally I wouldn’t use an sos! That’s like Brillo and May scratch. I’ve had success with a scrub daddy! It won’t scratch the glass top stove top.

Add a couple drops of lemon essential oil to your warm water. The lemon takes off the sticky grease and will leave the area smelling fresh and clean.

Can I make this without the ammonia? I never use it so I don’t have any. With everything going on and I have already done my shopping for the next two weeks and still can’t find disinfectant, I was hoping to make this to use.
    Thanks

You can Kathy. The ammonia is a grease cutter, alcohol is disinfectant and the vinegar is for hard water spots. I personally would just wipe my counters down with hot soapy water and then if I felt I needed more disinfecting would just wipe with a little alcohol on a rag.
