Buying Feeder Pigs

Eight-week-old pigs should weigh at least 35 pounds. Twelve-week-old pigs should weigh at least 60 pounds. Look for healthy pigs. Alert, active pigs are usually healthy.

Slaughter swine are those which are intended for slaughter immediately or in the near future. Feeder swine are those which are intended for slaughter after a period of feeding.

A feeder pig requires about 9 to 10 bushels of corn, 4 to 8 square feet of building space (depending on the size of the animal) and 1 to 2 hours of labor (depending on the number of pigs and the building system).

3: Use Gravity-Flow Tube Feeders. Tube feeders keep feed out of reach of hogs but available to deer. Protein feed or corn can be used in this type of feeder, and the design keeps hogs from using it. Brace the legs of the feeder with T-posts to prevent hogs from knocking it down.

KPRC 2 photographer and wild hog hunter Byron Nichols said the animals taste a lot like domestic pork, but with a slightly gamier taste. Whatever you choose, 50% of your feed should be yellow corn. The remainder of your pig's feed should be a mix of barley, wheat, and sorghum. Feed your pig various grains and see which it likes best. Use the pig's favorite grain in abundance in order to increase its weight.

As an energy source, choose a grain mix of barley, wheat, sorghum and corn for your pig's diet. At least half the mix should be number two yellow corn. Though low in protein, it is considered a primary energy source in pig diets. It is also one of the most economical feedstuffs available for swine production.

Sweet corn is a staple in hog baits, because hogs can easily recognize the smell. Corn will “sour” once soaked for several days, creating a smell that will attract hogs but keep other animals, such as deer, away.

The life cycle of a market pig lasts about 25 to 28 weeks or between six and seven months. They typically weigh 2 to 3 pounds at birth and are nurtured to their market weight of up to 280 pounds.

Depending on breed and frame size of the pig, most animals will achieve the desired level of back fat (10th rib fat) or finish (0.6 to 0.8 inches) and live weight (260 to 280 pounds) between five to six months of age. Gilts tend to grow a little slower than barrows, but are usually leaner.
