Once in a while, film lovers get treated to tales that have adult-child protagonist duos. Such dynamics open the door to many possibilities, as the movies can either involve the adult mentoring the child or protecting them. In the process, they get new and enlightening viewpoints of the world from the child. The child, on the other hand, gets adult guidance while becoming more mature at the same time, hence growing to be more responsible than other kids.
Whichever genre they fall under, such movies also tend to have greater emotional profundity, thus evoking feelings of poignancy or joy. And there is normally no greater feeling than watching the two parties working together to solve a major problem that has disrupted their lives. The following are, therefore, some of the most notable adult-child hero duos in Hollywood and beyond.
10 Leon and Mathilda in Leon: The Professional (1994)
Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional isn’t just about Leon as the title might suggest. The reclusive hitman finds a friend and confidant in his young neighbor, Mathilda, whose parents have just been murdered by a drug-addicted DEA agent and his confederates. Leon teaches Mathilda how to be an expert with weapons like him, and together, they seek revenge.

For a great bond to form, two people need to fill a major void in each other’s lives. Here, Leon is in desperate need of a friend, while Mathilda is in desperate need of a guardian. They thus serve as emotional anchors for each other. Additionally, they are each in need of a skill that the other possesses, and both of them are willing to learn. Leon teaches Mathilda how to handle weapons. In turn, she teaches him how to read and write. Given their dependence on each other, all the factors that are likely to cause friction between them are eliminated.

9 Michael Sullivan Sr. and Michael Sullivan Jr. in Road to Perdition (2002)
Road to Perdition has aged well, mainly because it’s a gripping tale that paints a perfect picture of both mob life and parenthood. In it, things initially go well for Mike Sullivan Sr. (Tom Hanks), an enforcer for a powerful Irish Depression-era mob boss, but when his son, Mike Jr. (Tyler Hoechlin), witnesses a mob hit, the Don’s erratic and jealous son uses the incident as an excuse to come after the enforcer. He murders Mike’s wife and one of his children, forcing the enforcer and his remaining son to go on the run as they plot vengeance.

It’s these particular traits that have made her deserving of a spot among the greatest Western movie sidekicks. And despite his history as a lawman, Cogburn isn’t overbearing when dealing with Mattie. He respects her opinion, and together, the two eventually get the job done.

7 The Man and The Boy in The Road (2009)
The father and son protagonists of The Road have no names. They don’t need any nouns. After all, they are very recognizable as the only two sane people remaining in a post-apocalyptic world filled with cannibals. Their goal is to get to the sea, but doing so is easier said than done.
The responsibility of each of the two characters is defined clearly in the movie. The Man exists to protect both of them, and The Boy exists to keep his father’s moral compass straight. Since it’s a crazy world they live in, The Man often gets tempted to kill and steal like everyone else, but whenever he tries to do so, The Boy becomes upset, forcing him to reconsider.

6 T-800 and John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)
James Cameron was happy to bring back the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, but this time the killing machine was a hero. The cyborg’s mission in the movie is to go back in time to 1995 and protect a young John Connor (Edward Fulong), who is destined to be a resistance leader against the machines in the future.

John helps the T-800 to understand human emotions, whereas the T-800 shields him from surprise attacks by the shapeshifting T-1000, but there is more to their relationship. Both characters are smart, hence they get to have some of the best banter. For example, when the T-800 explains to John that it’s the adult version of him that programmed him in a future timeline and sent him back in time.
John quickly understands the whole concept and responds with “This is deep!” John also persuades the T-800 to do silly things like putting up his hand up and swearing he won’t kill innocent people. It’s so interesting to watch that the sci-fi flick’s 140-minute running time feels inadequate.

5 The Tramp and The Kid in The Kid (1921)
Another intriguing adult-child protagonist duo can be found in one of Charlie Chaplin’s finest films, The Kid. The mayhem begins when The Tramp (Chaplin) finds a baby in an expensive car, with a note instructing the (un)lucky person to “please take care of this orphaned child.” The good-hearted man does so, but things get complicated in later years when nefarious figures try to separate them.
The talented Jackie Coogan was one of the first child stars in the history of Hollywood and his chemistry with Chaplin is what hoists the movie to great heights. The two time and complement each other’s slapstick moments to perfection. Additionally, the two enable each other to be responsible. The Kid develops better manners because The Tramp constantly reigns in on his delinquency and The Tramp learns to work harder so that he can raise the young boy comfortably.

4 Logan and Laura, aka, X-23 in Logan (2017)
Logan — the final chapter of the aging mutant’s X-Men journey — is widely considered a brilliant superhero film. It sees the popular Marvel character hiding from the world as he cares for his father figure, Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Soon, he bumps into Laura, a young girl who has the same powers as him. Upon realizing she is being hunted by an evil group, he vows to protect her.
In most cases, protagonist duos tend to have different characteristics and abilities, but Logan and Laura are the male and female versions of the same person. They both have retractable adamantium bone claws in their wrists and by combining forces, they can cut through enemies much quicker.
On top of that, each of them gives new meaning to the other’s life. When Logan first meets Laura, he is a washed-up hero, but by associating with her, he rediscovers his form. For her part, Laura learns to embrace her abilities after being inspired by Logan’s long journey as a superhero.
